Background:

  • Elevated serum lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] levels have been observed in euthyroid, normolipidemic males and postmenopausal females.
  • A known inverse correlation exists between Lp(a) concentration and apolipoprotein (a) [apo(a)] isoform size.
  • Previous reports suggest a potential association between thyroid autoimmunity and increased Lp(a) concentrations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between thyroid autoimmunity and serum lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] levels.
  • To determine if apolipoprotein (a) [apo(a)] isoform frequencies differ between individuals with and without thyroid autoimmunity.
  • To verify if thyroid autoimmunity is independently linked to elevated Lp(a) concentrations, independent of apo(a) isoform size.

Main Methods:

  • Apolipoprotein (a) [apo(a)] phenotypes were determined in 22 patients with thyroid autoimmunity and 64 age- and sex-matched controls.
  • Serum Lp(a) levels and lipid parameters were measured in both groups.
  • Analysis included subgroups based on low vs. high molecular weight apo(a) isoforms.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences in lipid parameters, including Lp(a) levels, were found between patients with and without thyroid autoimmunity.
  • Apolipoprotein (a) [apo(a)] phenotype frequencies were similar in both the thyroid autoimmunity and control groups.
  • Median serum Lp(a) levels did not differ significantly between patients and controls, irrespective of apo(a) isoform size.

Conclusions:

  • The findings contradict previous reports suggesting an association between thyroid autoimmunity and elevated Lp(a) concentrations.
  • Thyroid autoimmunity does not appear to be an independent determinant of serum Lp(a) levels in this study population.
  • The study highlights the importance of considering apo(a) isoform frequencies when evaluating Lp(a) associations.
