Summary

New spirometry reference equations were developed for native Mongolians, showing minimal differences in forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) compared to Caucasian data. These findings suggest existing Caucasian reference values may be applicable to Mongolians.

Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To derive new reference equations for forced vital capacity (FVC) and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) specifically for native Mongolians.
  • To compare spirometry data from native Mongolians with a 1981 Caucasian reference study.

  • Spirometry was conducted on 344 healthy, non-smoking urban native Mongolians (176 male, 168 female).
