    Area of Science:

    • Pharmacy practice
    • Medication safety

    Background:

    • Oral liquid medications are frequently prescribed for pediatric and geriatric patients.
    • Accurate medication delivery is crucial for patient safety, especially in vulnerable populations.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To survey the current use of oral syringes in children's and ASHP-accredited residency hospitals in the United States.
    • To identify patterns in oral syringe utilization and expiration dating policies.

    Main Methods:

    • A survey questionnaire was mailed to 131 hospitals.
    • 117 (89.3%) of the questionnaires were returned and analyzed.

    Main Results:

    • 54.5% of children's hospitals and 67.1% of residency hospitals reported using oral syringes.
    • Oral syringes were commonly used for pediatric, geriatric, and nasogastric tube patients.
    • Expiration dating policies varied significantly among hospitals.

    Conclusions:

    • Oral syringes are widely adopted in hospital settings for liquid medication administration.
    • There is a need to investigate medication stability when stored in oral syringes.
