    Summary

Progestogen treatment effectively managed recurrent aphthous stomatitis in women, particularly when lesions appeared during the late menstrual cycle. This hormonal therapy showed high patient satisfaction with minimal side effects.

    Area of Science:

    • Oral Medicine
    • Endocrinology
    • Dermatology

    Background:

    • Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) significantly impacts quality of life.
    • Hormonal fluctuations, particularly during the menstrual cycle, are implicated in some RAS cases.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of progestogen therapy for women with cyclically occurring RAS.
    • To assess patient satisfaction and side effects associated with progestogen treatment for RAS.

    Main Methods:

    • Ten female patients with a history of RAS for ≥5 years were enrolled.
    • Treatment involved intramuscular depot injections of progestogens (medroxyprogesterone acetate or gestronol hexanoate).
    • Lesion occurrence was specifically noted in the latter half of the menstrual cycle.

    Main Results:

    • All 10 patients reported satisfaction with the progestogen treatment.
    • The treatment demonstrated effectiveness in managing recurrent aphthous lesions.
    • Reported side effects were infrequent and minimal.

    Conclusions:

    • Intramuscular progestogen therapy is a viable and satisfactory treatment option for women experiencing cyclical RAS.
    • Hormonal management, specifically with progestogens, can be beneficial for specific patient subgroups with RAS.
