The relationship between hospital governing boards and administrators

The article examines the origin, nature, and resolution of varying types of conflict between hospital boards and administrators as illustrated in two contexts. The first case study describes conflicts at institutions where large ("upsized") boards become overly involved in hospital affairs after the management team has been downsized. The second case discusses the problem of board underinvolvement in hospital affairs within multihospital systems where a single board governs several administrative teams.
