Middle management: progress or demise?

Many Canadian health care facilities lack qualified, competent managers. Middle management positions are usually filled either by experienced technicians without managerial skills or training, or by business administration graduates who lack practical health care experience. Neither is satisfactory. This article stresses the need for better-trained administrators and for broader, more advanced training for technical personnel in order to prepare them for future managerial positions.
