Reflective Property of Parabolas01:26

Reflective Property of Parabolas

302
A parabola is a basic type of conic section that results from the intersection of a plane with a double-napped cone in a direction parallel to one of the cone's sides. This U-shaped curve has a distinctive reflective property: all incoming rays parallel to its axis of symmetry are directed toward a single point, known as the focus. This property is widely utilized in optical and communication technologies that require precise signal concentration. In analytic geometry, a parabola is defined as...

The Sense of Self: Reflected Self-Appraisal and Social Comparison

56.2K
According to Charles Cooley, we base our image on what we think other people see (Cooley 1902). We imagine how we must appear to others, then react to this speculation. We don certain clothes, prepare our hair in a particular manner, wear makeup, use cologne, and the like—all with the notion that our presentation of ourselves is going to affect how others perceive us. We expect a certain reaction, and, if lucky, we get the one we desire and feel good about it. But more than that, Cooley...

Reflection of Waves01:07

Reflection of Waves

4.7K
When a wave travels from one medium to another, it gets reflected at the boundary of the second medium. A common example of this is when a person yells at a distance from a cliff and hears the echo of their voice. The sound waves (longitudinal waves) traveling in the air are reflected from the bounding cliff. Similarly, flipping one end of a string whose other end is tied to a wall causes a pulse (transverse wave) to travel through the string, which gets reflected upon reaching the wall. In...

Community Based Intervention01:30

Community Based Intervention

492
Community-based interventions in mental health represent a paradigm shift from institution-centered care to treatments embedded within the fabric of local communities. By prioritizing inclusion and leveraging existing societal structures, this approach fosters a supportive environment conducive to addressing mental health challenges while promoting individual dignity and agency.

Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence Microscopy01:05

Total Internal Reflection Fluorescence Microscopy

13.5K
Total internal reflection fluorescence microscopy or TIRF is an advanced microscopic technique used to visualize fluorophores in samples close to a solid surface with a higher refractive index, such as a glass coverslip. TIRF only allows fluorophores in proximity to the solid surface to be excited. When light from a medium with a lower refractive index (such as air) hits the glass coverslip at a critical angle, the light undergoes total internal reflection stead of passing through the glass.

    Area of Science:

    • Social Work
    • Public Administration
    • Sociology

    Background:

    • Community control of social agencies is an existing concept, but the locus of control remains contested.
    • Human services agency managers navigate a complex power dynamic between sponsoring entities and service recipients.
    • The existing structure often perpetuates social inequities, including institutional racism.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze the implications of the consumer control movement in social agencies.
    • To examine the power dynamics between agency managers, sponsors, and consumers.
    • To assess the likelihood of agency directors embracing consumer control as a means of social justice.

    Main Methods:

    • Conceptual analysis of power structures within human services.
    • Examination of the role of agency managers in the context of community control.
    • Discussion of the relationship between agency practices and broader societal inequities.

    Main Results:

    • The consumer control movement advocates for a significant power redistribution from patrons to consumers.
    • Agency directors often lack identification with disadvantaged groups and benefit from the status quo.
    • Existing service delivery patterns reinforce societal inequities, making widespread adoption of consumer control unlikely.

    Conclusions:

    • Few agency directors are expected to fully embrace consumer control due to their position and the pervasive nature of social inequities.
    • The shift towards consumer control is viewed as a potential, albeit challenging, step towards a more equitable distribution of human services.
    • Addressing institutional racism and broader social injustices is crucial for the successful implementation of consumer control.
