Abstract:
The performance of certain surgical procedures in the ambulatory surgery setting has shown that high quality care and substantial cost savings are achievable. This article provides an overview of the concept. Further, it reviews studies of patient safety and quality control, patient and professional acceptance, and the impact on cost and efficiency in ambulatory care. While procedures of a serious nature should continue to be performed in the hospital, the ambulatory setting offers a viable alternative for procedures of less complexity.
