    Summary

Chronic persistent hepatitis has a favorable prognosis, not progressing to cirrhosis. Chronic aggressive hepatitis can lead to cirrhosis, especially in hyperactive cases. Primary liver cancer patients show altered protein levels.

    Area of Science:

    • Hepatology
    • Immunology
    • Oncology

    Background:

    • Chronic hepatitis encompasses various forms with different prognoses.
    • Understanding disease progression is crucial for patient management.
    • Biochemical and immunological markers may indicate disease severity and outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the long-term prognosis of chronic persistent hepatitis.
    • To determine the progression rate of chronic aggressive hepatitis to cirrhosis.
    • To identify serum markers associated with primary hepatocellular carcinoma.

    Main Methods:

    • Diagnosis of chronic hepatitis based on biochemical, immunological, and morphological criteria.
    • Longitudinal observation of 153 patients over a mean period of four years.
    • Analysis of serum immunoglobulin, coeruloplasmin, and transferrin levels in patients with primary hepatocellular carcinoma.

    Main Results:

    • Chronic persistent hepatitis showed a favorable prognosis with no observed progression to chronic aggressive hepatitis or cirrhosis.
    • Chronic aggressive hepatitis progressed to cirrhosis in 12 out of 65 cases.
    • Cirrhotic transformation was more frequent in hyperactive forms (8 out of 25 cases).
    • Primary hepatocellular carcinoma patients exhibited low immunoglobulin concentrations, increased coeruloplasmin, and reduced transferrin.

    Conclusions:

    • Chronic persistent hepatitis is a benign condition with excellent prognosis.
    • Chronic aggressive hepatitis carries a significant risk of progressing to cirrhosis.
    • Specific serum protein alterations may be indicative of primary hepatocellular carcinoma.
