Summary

This study found a low incidence of Streptococcus infections in burn patients without penicillin prophylaxis. The findings suggest routine penicillin prophylaxis may not be beneficial for burn wound infections.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the incidence and clinical outcomes of Streptococcus infections in burn patients.
  • To assess the necessity of penicillin prophylaxis in burn care.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study over 5 years (1993-1997) in a burn unit.
  • Monitored 1213 burn patients for Streptococcus colonization or infection.
  • No penicillin prophylaxis was administered during the study period.

  • Streptococcus species were isolated from burn wounds, throat, and blood cultures.

  • Penicillin prophylaxis for the first five post-burn days may not be valuable.
  • Discontinuation of routine penicillin prophylaxis is recommended where Streptococcus incidence is minimal.
