Grouping nursing home residents for prospective payment

The widespread interest in prospective payment systems for nursing home reimbursement raises an important question for providers: Can residents be meaningfully and reliably grouped according to their needs for care and treatment? This article uses sample data from seven midwestern nursing homes to examine the relationship between present levels of care and proposed classification methodologies.
