Insights
Early ultrasonography is crucial for diagnosing pediatric abdominal trauma, identifying injuries in most cases. This non-invasive imaging aids in effective management and prognosis for children with abdominal injuries.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Surgery
- Emergency Medicine
- Diagnostic Imaging
Background:
- Abdominal injuries are common in children.
- Prompt assessment is vital for effective management.
Purpose of the Study:
- To evaluate the utility of early ultrasonography in diagnosing pediatric abdominal trauma.
- To determine the types and frequency of injuries detected by ultrasonography.
Main Methods:
- Seventy children with abdominal trauma underwent early ultrasonography.
- Surgical intervention was based on ultrasonography findings.
Main Results:
- Abnormalities were detected in 52 out of 70 patients.
- Common findings included hematic peritoneal effusion (26 cases), renal lesions (20 cases), and hepatic lesions (10 cases).
- Surgery was performed in 6 cases; others were managed non-operatively with good outcomes.
Conclusions:
- Ultrasonography is a primary diagnostic tool for pediatric abdominal trauma.
- It provides early, efficient, and cost-effective morphological diagnosis.
- Computerized tomography (CT) scans have specific indications in pediatric abdominal trauma cases.
Unlabelled:
Abdominal injuries are frequent in children. Their early assessment is the best guarantee for an accurate management.
Patients And Methods:
Seventy children with abdominal trauma were evaluated by early ultrasonography.
Results:
This investigation found abnormalities in 52 patients, with hematic peritoneal effusion in 26 cases, renal lesion in 20 cases, hepatic lesion in ten cases, splenic lesion in seven cases and a lesion involving liver, spleen and pancreas in one case. Based on these results, surgery was performed in six cases. The remaining cases were simply supervised with a good prognosis.
Conclusion:
Ultrasonography represents the main investigation in children's abdominal trauma, allowing an early, efficient and non-costly morphological diagnosis. Computerized tomography (CT) scan has some particular indications.

Assessment of the Abdomen I: Inspection and Auscultation
The abdominal examination is a cornerstone of clinical medicine, serving as a critical tool in diagnosing various gastrointestinal (GI) diseases. It involves a systematic approach that includes inspection and auscultation, each with distinct yet complementary roles in assessing the abdomen. This article will delve into these two primary methods healthcare professionals use to examine the abdomen.

Ultrasound I: Abdominal Ultrasonography
Abdominal ultrasonography, commonly known as abdominal ultrasound, is a vital, non-invasive medical imaging technique widely used in healthcare.
Procedure:
This diagnostic tool allows the clinician to visually inspect internal structures within the abdomen, including vital organs such as the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, and spleen.
The abdominal ultrasound process begins with applying a special gel to the patient's skin over the abdomen. This gel enhances the...
