Summary

Novel environments reduce pain and inflammation in birds experiencing sodium urate-induced arthritis. Shifting attention in a new environment significantly decreased pain behaviors and peripheral inflammation.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To measure peripheral inflammation in birds exhibiting pain-coping behaviors.
  • To assess the impact of endogenous analgesia on pain and inflammation.

  • Sixteen birds received sodium urate injections into the ankle joint.
  • Birds were housed individually in cages or in pairs in a novel pen.
  • Pain-coping behavior and skin temperature over the inflamed joint were measured.

    • These factors also significantly reduce peripheral inflammation associated with arthritis.
    • Attention plays a crucial role in modulating pain and inflammatory responses.
