Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of cat sensitization on Tristan da Cunha.
  • To assess sensitization in a population with no cats since 1974.

Main Methods:

  • Cross-sectional survey of all Tristan da Cunha residents in 1993.
  • Allergy skin testing and dust sample analysis for allergens (cat and house dust mite).

Main Results:

  • 20.1% of residents showed positive cat skin tests.
  • 12.8% of those born after cat elimination (1975 onwards) were sensitized.
