Summary

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) in horses can cause colic. Surgical intervention for IBD, particularly removing constrictive bands, offers a good long-term survival prognosis for affected horses.

    • All horses survived surgery and were discharged; 91% (10/11) were alive at long-term follow-up (1.5-7 years).

    Conclusions:

    • IBD is an infrequent but treatable cause of colic in horses.
    • Surgical resection of CMB in horses with IBD can effectively alleviate colic signs.
    • Horses with IBD treated surgically demonstrate a favorable prognosis for long-term survival.
