Area of Science:

  • Cognitive psychology
  • Gerontology
  • Neurology

Background:

  • Memory complaints are common in aging populations.
  • Understanding the factors influencing memory complaints is crucial for differentiating normal aging from pathological conditions.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare memory complaints in cognitively normal individuals under and over 50 years old.
  • To investigate the relationship between memory complaints, cognitive function, and psychological factors.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 260 healthy adults (183 aged 50+ and 77 younger) with memory complaints.
  • Assessment of memory complaint severity, memory difficulties via questionnaire, and demographic/affective status.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Memory complaints and their correlates were similar in younger and older adults.
  • No significant correlation was found between memory complaint severity and objective memory performance.
  • Anxiety and affective status were strongly associated with memory complaints in both age groups.

Conclusions:

  • Memory complaints in older adults are not fundamentally different from those in younger adults.
  • Memory complaints are complex psychological symptoms influenced by multiple factors, not solely by age-related memory decline.
