Area of Science:

  • Speech and Language Therapy
  • Cross-cultural Communication
  • Sociology of Science

Background:

  • Speech and language therapy (SLT) faces challenges in communicating evidence-based practice within multicultural contexts.
  • Cultural imperialism can influence how SLT approaches and interacts with diverse client populations.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the implications of cultural imperialism in SLT's communication of evidence of practice.
  • To propose a conceptual framework for understanding and evaluating practice with multicultural clientele.
  • To advocate for a critical paradigm in SLT.

Main Methods:

  • Conceptual analysis of SLT's approach to evidence communication.
  • Application of a 'curriculum of practice' framework from a South African study.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Comparison of empirical-analytical, hermeneutic-interpretive, and critical paradigms.
  • Main Results:

    • The choice of paradigm significantly shapes the understanding of SLT's practice.
    • A critical paradigm offers a more nuanced approach to addressing cultural complexities in SLT.
    • Existing frameworks may perpetuate cultural biases if not critically examined.

    Conclusions:

    • SLT needs to adopt a critical lens to effectively serve multicultural clients.
    • Developing critical SLT involves re-evaluating practice paradigms and communication strategies.
    • A culturally sensitive approach is essential for equitable and effective speech and language therapy.
