    Area of Science:

    • Surgical research
    • Pharmacology
    • Biomedical engineering

    Background:

    • Intraperitoneal noxytiolin has been suggested to prevent adhesion formation.
    • Adhesions are a common complication following abdominal surgery.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the anti-adhesive effect of noxytiolin in a controlled animal model.
    • To establish a reliable experimental model for adhesion prevention studies.

    Main Methods:

    • A controlled trial was conducted using 80 rats.
    • Rats were divided into two groups: one receiving Ringer solution and the other receiving noxytiolin.
    • Adhesion formation was assessed in both groups.

    Main Results:

    • All rats receiving Ringer solution developed adhesions.
    • In contrast, 7 out of 40 rats treated with noxytiolin showed no adhesions (P < 0.02).
    • Noxytiolin significantly reduced the total number, mean number, and mean attachment length of adhesions (P < 0.05).

    Conclusions:

    • Noxytiolin demonstrates a significant anti-adhesive effect in a rat model.
    • Potential mechanisms include anticoagulant, cytotoxic, or antibacterial properties.
    • Further research is warranted to explore clinical applications.
