Fluvastatin significantly reduced soluble P-selectin (sP-selectin) levels in patients with peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD). This suggests fluvastatin may help slow atherosclerosis and decrease platelet activation in PAOD patients.

Background:

  • Peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) is linked to elevated cholesterol, triglycerides, and soluble P-selectin (sP-selectin).
  • Increased sP-selectin indicates platelet and endothelial cell activation at sites of vascular injury.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effect of fluvastatin on sP-selectin levels in patients with PAOD and hypercholesterolemia.

Main Methods:

  • A 12-week study involving 31 PAOD patients with hypercholesterolemia.
  • Patients received either fluvastatin or a placebo.
  • sP-selectin levels were measured before and after treatment.

Main Results:

  • Fluvastatin treatment significantly lowered sP-selectin levels (157.0 to 113.77 ng/ml, p=0.01).

  • Placebo treatment showed no significant change in sP-selectin levels (150.0 to 139.4 ng/ml).
  • Patients switched from placebo to fluvastatin also showed significant reduction in sP-selectin.

    • Fluvastatin effectively reduces sP-selectin levels in PAOD patients.
    • Lowering sP-selectin may attenuate atherosclerotic progression and decrease platelet activation in PAOD.
