    Summary

Lung carcinoids lack specific symptoms and diagnostic criteria. Surgical treatment is key, with typical carcinoids showing favorable outcomes, while atypical types have a poorer prognosis.

    Area of Science:

    • Pulmonology
    • Oncology
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Lung carcinoids are rare neuroendocrine tumors.
    • Diagnosis and differentiation from other lung tumors remain challenging.
    • Carcinoid syndrome was not observed in this patient cohort.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze the clinical presentation, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes of lung carcinoid patients.
    • To evaluate the effectiveness of diagnostic modalities and surgical interventions.
    • To differentiate between typical and atypical lung carcinoids based on morphological examination.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 29 patients treated between 1984-1995.
    • Diagnostic methods included roentgenography, CT scans, and bronchoscopy.
    • Tumor classification based on histological, electron microscopy, and immunohistochemical examination.

    Main Results:

    • 59% of carcinoids were peripheral, 41% central.
    • No pathognomonic symptoms or diagnostic criteria were identified.
    • Typical carcinoids (benign neuroendocrine tumors) had no deaths or relapses.
    • Atypical carcinoids (neuroendocrine carcinoma) resulted in 3 deaths within 6-12 months.

    Conclusions:

    • Accurate differentiation of lung carcinoids requires comprehensive morphological analysis.
    • Surgical resection (pneumonectomy or lobectomy with lymphadenectomy) is the primary treatment.
    • Typical carcinoids demonstrate excellent long-term survival, unlike atypical carcinoids.
