Reduction mammaplasty is a safe procedure for adolescent girls with breast deformities from thermal injuries. Surgeons can successfully reduce breast size after skin grafting without compromising the nipple-areola complex.

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Burn Reconstruction
  • Adolescent Medicine

Background:

  • Severe disfigurement of the breasts can result from thermal injury in adolescent girls.
  • Mammary hyperplasia may occur following full-thickness breast burns.
  • Plastic surgeons often hesitate to perform reduction mammaplasty due to concerns about skin graft viability.

Observation:

  • A series of six patients with full-thickness breast burns and prior skin grafting underwent reduction mammaplasty.
  • The inferior-pedicle technique was employed for the reduction mammaplasty.
  • Mean tissue removed was 454g (left) and 395g (right).

Findings:

  • Reduction mammaplasty was safely performed in all six patients.
  • No instances of nipple loss, hematoma, or infection were reported.

Related Experiment Videos

  • No major skin flap loss occurred post-procedure.
  • Implications:

    • Reduction mammaplasty is a viable and safe surgical option for adolescent patients with post-burn breast deformities.
    • Careful adherence to key surgical principles minimizes risks associated with the procedure.
    • This technique can improve patient outcomes and quality of life following severe thermal injury.
