    Background:

    • Radioisotope (RI) cisternography is a diagnostic imaging technique.
    • 169Yb-DTPA has been commonly used, while 111In-DTPA is a newer alternative.

    Observation:

    • A comparative study evaluated 111In-DTPA against 169Yb-DTPA in 160 patients undergoing RI cisternography.
    • 301 procedures were analyzed, with 137 using 169Yb-DTPA and 53 using 111In-DTPA.

    Findings:

    • 111In-DTPA demonstrated excellent chemical stability after intrathecal administration.
    • Minimal reactive fever and no aseptic meningitis were observed with 111In-DTPA.
    • Effective half-life was 16 hours for 111In-DTPA versus 22 hours for 169Yb-DTPA, indicating lower radiation exposure.
    • Diagnostic value was equivalent between both agents up to 48 hours post-administration.

    Implications:

    • 111In-DTPA presents a safer profile with reduced radiation dose for patients.
    • The findings suggest 111In-DTPA is a more suitable radiopharmaceutical for RI cisternography.
    • Further clinical adoption of 111In-DTPA is warranted based on its safety and efficacy.
