A rare hibernoma, a benign tumor, was found in the posterior mediastinum of an asymptomatic patient. Surgical removal is recommended for this exceptionally uncommon tumor, which has no malignant potential.

Area of Science:

  • Thoracic surgery
  • Surgical pathology
  • Diagnostic imaging

Background:

  • Mediastinal masses can present diagnostic challenges.
  • Hibernomas are rare, benign tumors of brown adipose tissue.
  • The posterior mediastinum is an unusual location for neoplasms.

Observation:

  • A 46-year-old male incidentally found to have a large posterior mediastinal mass.
  • The patient remained asymptomatic despite the large tumor size.
  • Imaging studies did not definitively characterize the mass.

Findings:

  • Surgical excision revealed the mass to be a hibernoma.
  • This represents an extremely rare occurrence of hibernoma in the mediastinum.
  • The tumor was completely removed via thoracotomy.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case highlights the importance of surgical pathology for diagnosing rare mediastinal tumors.
  • Complete excision is curative for hibernomas due to their benign nature.
  • Further research into the imaging characteristics of mediastinal hibernomas may be warranted.
