Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Surgical Education
  • Medical Training

Background:

  • Surgical training in Great Britain is evolving with Higher Surgical Training.
  • Concerns exist regarding haphazard training and inadequate supervision for junior surgeons.
  • The Calman Report and Vascular Surgical Society recommendations necessitate changes in training.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To audit the venous surgical experience of vascular trainees in Great Britain.
  • To identify deficiencies in current vascular surgery training programs.
  • To assess the adequacy of venous surgery training for junior and senior trainees.

Main Methods:

  • A questionnaire survey was distributed to 90 vascular surgical trainees.
  • A response rate of 76.7% (n=69) was achieved.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Data collected focused on the duration of vascular firm experience and specific training received.
  • Main Results:

    • Nearly half of trainees had over 12 months on a pure vascular firm.
    • Most trainees received formal training in sapheno-femoral and sapheno-popliteal junction ligation.
    • Significant training gaps were identified in deep venous surgery and microsclerotherapy.

    Conclusions:

    • Current training schedules inadequately cover the scope of venous surgery.
    • Specialized vascular units do not guarantee comprehensive venous surgery training.
    • Training requires greater focus and tailoring to individual trainee experience levels.
