Summary

Sutureless scleral tunnel trabeculectomy effectively lowers intraocular pressure (IOP) in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients. This safe surgical technique shows promising results for IOP control and glaucoma management.

Area of Science:

  • Ophthalmology
  • Surgical Innovation
  • Glaucoma Research

Background:

  • Primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) is a leading cause of irreversible blindness.
  • Effective intraocular pressure (IOP) control is crucial for managing POAG progression.
  • Traditional trabeculectomy can have complications, necessitating exploration of alternative techniques.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To prospectively evaluate the surgical outcomes of a sutureless scleral tunnel trabeculectomy.
  • To assess IOP control and safety in patients with uncomplicated POAG.
  • To determine the efficacy of this minimally invasive glaucoma surgery.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective evaluation of 18 patients (20 eyes) with uncomplicated POAG and IOP > 21 mmHg.
  • All patients underwent sutureless scleral tunnel trabeculectomy under retrobulbar anesthesia.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Postoperative assessment included IOP, visual acuity, bleb status, and complications over 1 year.
  • Main Results:

    • Mean IOP decreased from 26.6 mmHg preoperatively to 15.3 mmHg at 1 year postoperatively.
    • No intraoperative complications were observed.
    • An absolute success rate of 79.0% was achieved, with transient mild hyphema and shallow anterior chamber managed conservatively.

    Conclusions:

    • Sutureless scleral tunnel trabeculectomy is a safe and effective procedure for uncomplicated POAG.
    • The technique demonstrates significant IOP reduction and a favorable safety profile.
    • Further large-scale studies with extended follow-up are recommended to validate these findings.
