Summary

Vigorous late-night exercise, even with bright light, did not significantly disrupt sleep onset or duration in highly fit cyclists. These findings challenge the common belief that intense exercise before bed negatively impacts sleep quality.

Background:

  • The impact of late-night exercise on sleep remains a topic of debate.
  • Previous research often suggests that vigorous physical activity close to bedtime can impair sleep quality.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of prolonged, vigorous late-night exercise combined with bright light on the sleep patterns of highly fit individuals.
  • To determine if such exercise significantly alters sleep onset latency, wakefulness after sleep onset, or total sleep time.

Main Methods:

  • Sixteen male cyclists underwent two laboratory treatments in a counterbalanced order: 3 hours of cycling at 65-75% heart rate reserve with bright light (3000 lux), or 3 hours of bright light (3000 lux) alone.
  • Sleep was monitored using Actillume wrist monitors, and subjective sleep quality was assessed daily.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences were observed in objective sleep measures (sleep onset latency, wakefulness after sleep onset, total sleep time) between the exercise + bright light treatment and the bright light alone treatment.
  • Subjective assessments of sleep quality and insomnia also showed no significant variations between the experimental conditions and baseline/recovery nights.

Conclusions:

  • The study's findings contradict the widely held belief that vigorous exercise performed shortly before bedtime disrupts sleep.
  • Prolonged, intense exercise in the late evening does not appear to negatively affect sleep in well-trained athletes.
