Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Cardiovascular Disease Prevention

Background:

  • Cardiovascular disease (CVD) poses a significant public health challenge.
  • Identifying and managing CVD risk factors is crucial for primary prevention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors in Northern Helsinki.
  • To identify individuals at high risk for CVD.
  • To facilitate referral to local primary care CVD prevention programs.

Main Methods:

  • A descriptive survey utilizing computer-assisted telephone interviews (CATI) was conducted.
  • Prevalence of self-reported CVD risk factors including smoking, BMI, and family history was assessed.
  • 1000 randomly selected inhabitants aged 18-65 were targeted, with 667 interviewed.

Main Results:

  • High cardiovascular risk scores were concentrated in older age groups.
  • 23% of women and 28% of men were estimated to be at high risk of coronary artery disease.
  • Gender differences in risk scores were noted in the 45-54 age group.

Conclusions:

  • Computer-assisted telephone interview (CATI) is an effective method for screening high-CVD-risk patients.
  • CATI facilitates directing at-risk individuals to local primary prevention programs.
