Area of Science:

  • Pulmonology
  • Oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Peripheral bronchial carcinoids are typically solitary peripheral lung lesions.
  • Neuroendocrine tumors of the lung present a diverse range of clinical and pathological features.

Observation:

  • A 74-year-old male presented with widespread bronchial carcinoid tumors throughout the lung parenchyma.
  • Pulmonary function tests indicated mild airflow obstruction.
  • Metastatic disease was excluded, and histological examination confirmed peripheral bronchial carcinoid.

Findings:

  • The patient was diagnosed with a primary multifocal peripheral bronchial carcinoid.
  • Immunohistochemistry demonstrated immunoreactivity for chromogranin A and bombesin.
  • This represents an unusual diffuse, multifocal presentation of peripheral bronchial carcinoid.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known spectrum of bronchial carcinoid presentations.
  • Understanding rare multifocal patterns is crucial for accurate diagnosis and management of lung neuroendocrine tumors.
  • Immunohistochemistry plays a vital role in confirming the diagnosis of challenging cases.
