A rare intestinal tumor, intramural ileocaecocolic leiomyosarcoma, was diagnosed in a domestic shorthaired cat. Despite surgical removal, the cancer recurred, leading to euthanasia.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Oncology
  • Surgical Pathology

Background:

  • Leiomyosarcomas are uncommon soft tissue sarcomas originating from smooth muscle.
  • Intramural gastrointestinal leiomyosarcomas are rare in felines.

Observation:

  • An elderly, neutered male domestic shorthaired cat presented with anorexia and weight loss.
  • A palpable abdominal mass was identified, suggestive of an intestinal lesion.

Findings:

  • Histopathology revealed a poorly differentiated soft tissue sarcoma.
  • Immunohistochemistry confirmed leiomyosarcoma with positive vimentin and alpha-smooth muscle actin staining.
  • Surgical resection of the intramural ileocaecocolic mass was performed.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the diagnostic challenges and aggressive nature of feline intestinal leiomyosarcomas.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Early detection and complete surgical excision are crucial for improving outcomes.
  • Further research into novel therapeutic strategies for feline leiomyosarcoma is warranted.
