Area of Science:

  • Pediatric Cardiology
  • Congenital Heart Disease
  • Neonatal Medicine

Background:

  • Tricuspid atresia and persistent truncus arteriosus are rare congenital heart defects.
  • Their combined occurrence is exceptionally uncommon, posing diagnostic and therapeutic challenges.

Observation:

  • A newborn presented with prenatal diagnosis of tricuspid atresia.
  • Postnatal echocardiography revealed an associated type II persistent truncus arteriosus.
  • The infant exhibited mild cyanosis and rapidly progressed to heart failure.

Findings:

  • The rare combination of tricuspid atresia and persistent truncus arteriosus was confirmed.
  • Despite balloon septostomy to improve interatrial communication, the patient's condition deteriorated.
  • The neonate died at 14 days of life due to sepsis and heart failure.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the critical importance of comprehensive postnatal echocardiography for diagnosing complex congenital heart anomalies.
  • It underscores the severe prognosis associated with this rare combination of defects.
  • Further research into management strategies for such complex cases may be warranted.
