Cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) significantly reduced depressive symptoms in bipolar depression patients, similar to unipolar depression patients. However, improvements in dysfunctional attitudes were less pronounced in the bipolar group, suggesting further research is needed.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) is effective for unipolar depression.
  • Limited data exists on CBT's efficacy for bipolar depression.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare CBT efficacy in bipolar depression versus unipolar depression.
  • To evaluate CBT combined with mood stabilizers for bipolar depression.

Main Methods:

  • Matched-case control study.
  • 20 sessions of CBT administered.
  • 11 bipolar depressed patients and 11 unipolar depressed controls.

Main Results:

  • Bipolar depression patients showed similar symptom reduction to unipolar patients.
  • Bipolar patients had less improvement in dysfunctional attitudes.

Related Experiment Videos

  • CBT was effective in reducing depressive symptoms for both groups.
  • Conclusions:
