This study describes new Lipomyces species and proposes three species clusters based on nuclear genome comparisons. Phylogenetic analysis using ribosomal RNA (rRNA) and DNA (nDNA) homology reveals complexities in species delimitation within the Lipomycetaceae family.
Area of Science:
- Mycology
- Yeast Taxonomy
- Molecular Phylogenetics
Background:
- The genus Lipomyces is a group of yeasts with complex taxonomic relationships.
- Previous classifications relied on morphological and limited molecular data.
- Understanding the genetic diversity within Lipomyces is crucial for accurate phylogenetic placement.
Purpose of the Study:
- To describe new species within the genus Lipomyces.
- To investigate the phylogenetic relationships among Lipomyces species using molecular data.
- To provide an updated key for species identification in the genus.
Main Methods:
- Nuclear genome comparison for species-cluster identification.
- Ribosomal RNA (rRNA) nucleotide sequence analyses (18S and 25S subunits).
- Nuclear DNA (nDNA) homology determinations.
Main Results:
- Three distinct species-clusters were identified within the genus Lipomyces based on nuclear genome comparison.
- A key for the nine currently recognized species of Lipomyces is provided.
- Species delimitation using rRNA sequence analyses and nDNA homology did not always yield congruent results.
Conclusions:
- The genus Lipomyces comprises three main species-clusters.
- Phylogenetic studies in the Lipomycetaceae family benefit from comprehensive ribosomal nucleotide sequence analyses of both teleomorphic and anamorphic forms.
- Further molecular investigations are needed to refine species boundaries in Lipomyces.
