Summary
Human parvovirus B19 (PVB19) IgG antibodies are more prevalent in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients than healthy controls. However, active PVB19 infection is not detected during MS exacerbations.

- PVB19-specific DNA was analyzed in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) via PCR.

- Higher prevalence of anti-PVB19 IgG was found in MS patients (65.8%) compared to healthy controls (40%).
- No significant difference in IgG prevalence was observed between MS patients and those with other neurological diseases (50%).
- PVB19 DNA and IgM were undetectable in CSF, even during MS exacerbations.
Conclusions:
- MS patients exhibit a higher past exposure to PVB19.
- Current evidence does not support active PVB19 infection as a trigger for MS exacerbations.
