Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify key factors associated with acute low back injury in a large municipal workforce.
  • To analyze the impact of job strain, physical characteristics, and work movements on injury risk.

Main Methods:

  • A case-control study involving 200 injured employees and 400 matched coworker controls.
  • Data collection through in-person interviews covering demographics, work history, psychosocial factors, and anthropometrics.
  • Multivariate logistic regression and factor analysis were employed to identify risk factors.

Main Results:

  • High job strain emerged as the most significant risk factor for acute low back injury (OR = 2.12).
  • A dose-response relationship was observed for job strain.
  • Elevated Body Mass Index (OR = 1.54) and specific work movements (OR = 1.42) were also significant contributing factors.
