Laryngeal chondromas are rare tumors, accounting for less than 0.1% of laryngeal neoplasms. This study describes three cases, with two patients remaining disease-free five years post-surgery, indicating potential for good outcomes with treatment.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Otorhinolaryngology

Background:

  • Laryngeal sarcomas are exceptionally rare, comprising about 1% of all laryngeal tumors.
  • Chondrosarcomas represent a small fraction of these rare laryngeal sarcomas.

Observation:

  • Three cases of laryngeal chondromas were analyzed.
  • Patients were men aged 65-75 years.
  • Tumors originated in the cricoid cartilage (two cases) and thyroid cartilage (one case).

Findings:

  • Two of the chondrosarcomas were high-grade and undifferentiated.
  • Two patients achieved a 5-year disease-free survival post-surgical intervention.
  • No recurrences or metastases were observed in these two patients at the 5-year mark.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Despite rarity and aggressive histology in some cases, laryngeal chondromas may have favorable prognoses.
  • Surgical management appears effective in achieving long-term remission.
  • Further research into laryngeal chondrosarcoma treatment strategies is warranted.
