Thyrotropin (TSH)-producing microadenomas are rare pituitary tumors. This report details two confirmed cases, highlighting diagnostic challenges and surgical outcomes for these uncommon TSH-omas.

Area of Science:

  • Endocrinology
  • Neurosurgery
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Thyrotropin (TSH)-producing adenomas (TSH-omas) are rare pituitary tumors, with macroadenomas being more common than microadenomas.
  • Differentiating TSH-omas from pituitary resistance to thyroid hormones can be challenging due to overlapping clinical and biochemical features and normal pituitary imaging in some TSH-oma cases.

Observation:

  • This study presents two cases of TSH-producing microadenoma, a particularly exceptional presentation.
  • Both cases were confirmed following pituitary surgery.

Findings:

  • Pituitary surgery is the primary treatment for TSH-omas, but achieving complete hyperthyroidism recovery is not always successful.
  • Radiotherapy and somatostatin analogues serve as alternative treatments when surgery is ineffective or not feasible.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • The findings underscore the importance of considering TSH-producing microadenomas in the differential diagnosis of pituitary disorders.
  • Successful surgical confirmation in these microadenoma cases provides valuable insights into managing this rare entity.
