Malignant mesothelioma is a rare, aggressive cancer. A palliative approach combining surgery and low-dose chemotherapy improved survival and quality of life for one patient.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Medical Oncology

Background:

  • Malignant mesothelioma is a rare, aggressive neoplasm with poor prognosis.
  • Treatment is challenging due to chemo- and radio-resistance, high mortality, and reduced quality of life.
  • Palliative care strategies are essential for managing this disease.

Observation:

  • A patient with malignant mesothelioma underwent palliative surgery.
  • The patient received loco-regional and "maintenance" systemic chemotherapy with Taxol at a minimal effective dosage (135 mg/m2 every 3 weeks).

Findings:

  • The patient survived for 27 months post-treatment.
  • The patient maintained a good quality of life throughout the follow-up period.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • This case suggests that a tailored palliative strategy, including surgery and low-dose maintenance chemotherapy, can be effective for malignant mesothelioma.
  • Such an approach may improve both survival and quality of life in patients with this aggressive cancer.
  • Further research into optimized palliative regimens for malignant mesothelioma is warranted.
