Summary

A supravalvular mitral ring was successfully removed from a two-year-old girl. Careful surgical technique preserved the mitral valve during the excision of the congenital heart defect.

Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Pediatric Cardiac Surgery
  • Congenital Heart Disease

Background:

  • Supravalvular mitral ring (SMR) is a rare congenital anomaly affecting the mitral valve.
  • Early diagnosis and surgical intervention are crucial for preventing complications.

Observation:

  • A two-year-old female presented with a supravalvular mitral ring.
  • Preoperative echocardiography confirmed the SMR with largely normal mitral valve leaflets.
  • The SMR was noted to be adherent to the mitral valve.

Findings:

  • Successful surgical excision of the supravalvular mitral ring was performed.
  • The surgical team exercised meticulous care to avoid injury to the mitral valve during the procedure.
  • The patient tolerated the surgery well.

Related Experiment Videos

Implications:

  • This case highlights the feasibility of complete SMR excision in pediatric patients.
  • Preservation of mitral valve function is paramount during SMR resection.
  • Successful surgical management can lead to improved long-term outcomes for children with SMR.
