Thallium-201 chloride scintigraphy shows promise for diagnosing multiple myeloma. Combining it with bone scintigraphy may improve diagnostic accuracy compared to bone scintigraphy alone.

Area of Science:

  • Nuclear medicine
  • Oncology

Background:

  • Multiple myeloma and extramedullary plasmacytoma are plasma cell neoplasms.
  • Accurate diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment planning.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical utility of Thallium-201 chloride (201Tl) scintigraphy.
  • To compare 201Tl scintigraphy with bone scintigraphy in diagnosing multiple myeloma and extramedullary plasmacytoma.

Main Methods:

  • 20 patients underwent both 201Tl and bone scintigraphy.
  • Planar imaging was performed using the same instrument for both modalities.

Main Results:

  • 201Tl scintigraphy detected increased uptake in 75% (15/20) of patients.
  • Compared to bone scintigraphy, 201Tl scintigraphy was more useful in detecting lesions in 11/17 patients.

Conclusions:

  • 201Tl scintigraphy demonstrates potential in diagnosing multiple myeloma.
  • The combination of 201Tl and bone scintigraphy may enhance diagnostic accuracy for multiple myeloma.
