Summary

Mast cells (MC) accumulate in the kidneys during rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (RPGN), correlating with inflammation and fibrosis. These mast cells may play a role in the fibroproliferative process of RPGN.

Background:

  • The role of mast cells (MC) in tubulointerstitial damage in glomerulonephritis (GN) remains unclear.
  • Understanding MC involvement is crucial for deciphering the pathogenesis of kidney disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the distribution and phenotype of mast cells in renal biopsies from patients with rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis (RPGN).
  • To correlate mast cell accumulation with inflammatory cell infiltration and interstitial fibrosis in RPGN.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of renal biopsies from 50 RPGN patients and 20 controls.
  • Immunohistochemical staining for mast cell tryptase (MC(T)) and chymase (MC(TC)), alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA), CD3, CD20, and CD68.
  • Quantification of stained cells and measurement of interstitial areas.

  • MC(TC) may serve as a marker for disease severity and progression in RPGN.
