Background:

Observation:

  • A complex bilateral variation in the lumbar plexus of a 32-year-old male cadaver was observed.
  • The left lumbar plexus was postfixed, located posterior to the psoas major muscle, with the femoral nerve formed by L2-L5 spinal nerves.
  • The right lumbar plexus was prefixed, situated within the psoas major muscle, exhibiting distinct formations for the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh, femoral nerve, and obturator nerve.

Findings:

  • The left femoral nerve originated from the anterior rami of the second, third, fourth, and fifth lumbar spinal nerves.
  • The right lumbar plexus showed prefixed characteristics, with the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh formed by the first and second lumbar spinal nerves.
  • The right femoral nerve received contributions from the first, second, third, and fifth lumbar spinal nerves, while the obturator nerve arose from the first, second, and third lumbar spinal nerves.

Implications:

  • The observed variations differ significantly from previously documented lumbar plexus formations in anatomical literature.
  • Understanding such anatomical anomalies is vital for accurate diagnosis and effective treatment in clinical practice, particularly in surgery and neurology.
  • This case underscores the importance of detailed anatomical studies to document the spectrum of human anatomical variations.
