Summary

External cephalic version (ECV) is a safe procedure for turning breech or transverse lie fetuses at 36+ weeks gestation. This study found ECV to be 65% successful, potentially reducing cesarean sections.

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Maternal-Fetal Medicine

Background:

  • Breech presentation and transverse lie fetuses at term are indications for cesarean delivery.
  • External cephalic version (ECV) is a non-invasive procedure to convert a non-vertex presentation to a vertex presentation before labor.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To preliminarily report the safety and success rate of external cephalic version (ECV).
  • To evaluate the potential of ECV in reducing cesarean section rates for breech presentation or transverse lie.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective study enrolling 32 patients at 36 weeks gestation or more with breech presentation or transverse lie.
  • External cephalic version (ECV) procedure performed by the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • ECV was successful in 65% of patients.
  • The fetal reversion rate was 5%.
  • No maternal or fetal complications were reported.

Conclusions:

  • ECV appears to be a safe procedure with a promising success rate.
  • Fetal spine position, placental location, and amniotic fluid volume may influence ECV success.
  • A larger study is required to confirm the efficacy and true success rate of ECV.
