Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Infectious Diseases
  • Parasitology

Background:

  • Cysticercosis is a common parasitic nervous system disease.
  • Spinal involvement is rare (0.7%-5.8%), with intramedullary cysticercosis being particularly uncommon.

Observation:

  • A 52-year-old female presented with intramedullary cysticercosis at the C4-C5 level.
  • Surgical complete exeresis of the lesion was performed with a favorable outcome.

Findings:

  • A literature review identified 45 cases of intramedullary cysticercosis.
  • This case adds to the limited but growing body of evidence on this rare condition.

Implications:

  • Intramedullary cysticercosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of intramedullary lesions.
