Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Neurosurgery
  • Medical Case Reports

Background:

  • Atlantoaxial dislocation is a rare condition affecting the upper cervical spine.
  • Vertical atlantoaxial dislocation presents unique challenges in diagnosis and management.
  • Neurological compromise is a common concern in severe spinal dislocations.

Observation:

  • An unusual case of vertical atlantoaxial dislocation was identified.
  • The patient presented without medulla oblongata or spinal cord injury.
  • The pathogenic mechanism was hypothesized to be occipito-axial dislocation.

Findings:

  • Surgical intervention was performed for the atlantoaxial dislocation.
  • The surgical treatment yielded excellent outcomes.
  • Significant improvements in patient mobility and pain reduction were observed.

Implications:

  • This case highlights the potential for successful surgical management of complex cervical spine dislocations.
  • Early diagnosis and surgical intervention can lead to favorable prognoses.
  • Understanding the pathogenic process of occipito-axial dislocation is crucial for managing similar cases.
