Area of Science:

  • Cardiology
  • Medical Device Technology

Background:

  • Implantation of cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) is a common procedure for managing cardiac arrhythmias.
  • Potential complications associated with ICD implantation require ongoing investigation.

Observation:

  • A 65-year-old male patient presented with symptoms suggestive of myocardial ischemia.
  • Imaging revealed a close proximity between the tip of the implanted ICD electrode and the distal portion of the left anterior descending artery (LAD).

Findings:

  • The ICD electrode was observed to compress the LAD during ventricular systole.
  • This mechanical compression is hypothesized to be the cause of the observed myocardial ischemia.

Implications:

  • This case highlights a potential, previously unreported complication of ICD implantation.
