Summary

A young dog experienced abnormal bleeding post-surgery due to factor VII deficiency. This inherited coagulation disorder was diagnosed after ruling out acquired causes like vitamin K deficiency.

Area of Science:

  • Veterinary Medicine
  • Hematology
  • Canine Genetics

Background:

  • Routine orchectomy is a common surgical procedure in veterinary medicine.
  • Coagulation disorders can lead to significant post-operative complications, including excessive bleeding.
  • Factor VII deficiency is a rare inherited bleeding disorder affecting multiple species.

Observation:

  • A 5-month-old mixed-breed dog presented with abnormal bleeding after a routine orchectomy.
  • The bleeding did not respond to vitamin K therapy.
  • No plasma coagulation inhibitors were detected in the patient's blood.

Findings:

  • The abnormal bleeding was diagnosed as factor VII deficiency.
  • The clinical presentation and lack of response to vitamin K suggested an inherited etiology.

  • The absence of a detected coagulation inhibitor further supported an inherited factor VII deficiency.
  • Implications:

    • This case highlights the importance of considering inherited coagulation disorders in young animals with unexplained bleeding.
    • Accurate diagnosis of factor VII deficiency is crucial for appropriate management and potential genetic counseling.
    • Understanding the genetic basis of bleeding disorders in dogs can improve diagnostic and therapeutic strategies.
