Summary

A young dog experienced abnormal bleeding post-surgery due to factor VII deficiency. This inherited coagulation disorder was diagnosed after ruling out acquired causes like vitamin K deficiency.

Background:

Routine orchectomy is a common surgical procedure in veterinary medicine.
Coagulation disorders can lead to significant post-operative complications, including excessive bleeding.
Factor VII deficiency is a rare inherited bleeding disorder affecting multiple species.

Observation:

A 5-month-old mixed-breed dog presented with abnormal bleeding after a routine orchectomy.
The bleeding did not respond to vitamin K therapy.
No plasma coagulation inhibitors were detected in the patient's blood.

Findings:

The abnormal bleeding was diagnosed as factor VII deficiency.
The clinical presentation and lack of response to vitamin K suggested an inherited etiology.
