Summary

Pregnant women over 35 experienced fewer normal vaginal deliveries and more cesarean sections compared to younger women. Re-evaluating cesarean section indications in advanced maternal age pregnancies is recommended to reduce associated risks.

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Maternal-Fetal Medicine
  • Reproductive Health

Context:

  • Advanced maternal age (35+ years) is associated with potential pregnancy complications.
  • Comparing maternal-fetal outcomes between older and younger pregnant women is crucial for clinical practice.
  • Controlling for confounding factors like smoking and obesity provides a clearer comparison.

Purpose:

  • To compare maternal-fetal outcomes in pregnant women aged 35 and older versus those aged 20-29.
  • To identify significant differences in morbimortality between these two age groups after excluding confounding variables.

Summary:

  • A study of 268 pregnant women (134 aged 35+ and 134 aged 20-29) found significant differences in delivery methods.
  • Older women had fewer normal vaginal deliveries (32% vs. 49.2%) and more cesarean sections (P < 0.001).

Related Experiment Videos

  • No statistically significant differences were observed in other maternal-fetal outcomes like abortions, congenital anomalies, or perinatal deaths.
  • Impact:

    • Findings suggest that cesarean section indications in advanced maternal age pregnancies should be re-evaluated.
    • Reducing unnecessary cesarean sections can lower associated maternal and neonatal morbidity.
    • This research can inform clinical guidelines for managing pregnancies in older women.
