Background:
The etiology of the inflammatory bowel disease is unknown. Previous studies have shown an association between the allele 2 of IL1RN, the gene that encodes for the interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra), and the inflammatory bowel disease.
Patients And Methods:
We have analyzed the incidence of the IL1RN alleles in 41 patients with ulcerative colitis and in 40 healthy subjects.
Results:
Our results show the same allelic distribution between the subjects with ulcerative colitis and the healthy population.
Conclusions:
These results suggest that the allelic variants of the VNTR of the IL-1ra gene are not associated to a higher susceptibility to ulcerative colitis in Spanish population.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease I: Ulcerative Colitis
Inflammatory bowel disease, or IBD, encompasses a group of disorders characterized by chronic inflammation or ulceration of the gastrointestinal tract.
Risk Factors
The exact cause of IBD remains unclear, although it is believed to be due to a mix of genetic, environmental, microbial, and immune factors. Genetic factors are significant in determining susceptibility to IBD, with family history being a critical risk factor. Individuals with a first-degree relative who has IBD are at...
