Endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is a rare uterine cancer. Histologic grade is crucial for prognosis, with low-grade ESS showing better outcomes than high-grade ESS.

Area of Science:

  • Gynecologic Oncology
  • Pathology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Endometrial stromal sarcoma (ESS) is a rare malignant neoplasm originating in the uterus.
  • Clinicopathologic evaluations are essential for understanding rare tumor behaviors.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To conduct a clinicopathologic evaluation of five patients diagnosed with endometrial stromal sarcoma.
  • To analyze the prognostic significance of histologic grade and tumor stage in ESS.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of 5 ESS cases over 9 years.
  • FIGO staging for endometrial cancer was applied.
  • Neoplasms were classified into low-grade and high-grade based on mitotic activity.
  • Treatment modalities included curettage, surgery, and chemotherapy.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Two patients with low-grade ESS (Stage Ib and Ic) are alive and disease-free at 25 and 36 months post-diagnosis.
  • Three patients with high-grade ESS (Stage IIIa) unfortunately died within 14-36 months.
  • All patients received surgical treatment; 4 out of 5 received adjuvant chemotherapy.

Conclusions:

  • Endometrial stromal sarcoma is an uncommon uterine malignancy.
  • Histologic grade is identified as the most significant prognostic factor in ESS.
  • Early-stage, low-grade ESS demonstrates a favorable prognosis compared to high-grade, advanced-stage disease.
