[The role of hereditary factors in the development of thyroid nodular formations]

As many as 479 patients with focal pathology of the thyroid gland were exposed to a surgical or conservative treatment over the period of 1991-1997. Based on the clinical and genealogical investigation in 78 subjects of the above series it was ascertained that heredity has a part in the origination of euthyroid and toxic adenomas, multinodular toxic goiter, and recurring non-toxic nodular goiter (37.3%, 29.6%, and 64.2% respectively). Heredity-related forms of thyroid nodular formations are characterized by progressive irreversible development of the abnormality, low efficiency of suppressive therapy, which fact warrants a surgical treatment to be initiated together with an attentive prophylaxis of development of relapses.
